Guest post: How to shorten a separating nylon zipper

When I sewed my most recent Cicero hack, I made some process pictures on how I shorten separating nylon zippers. The biggest challenge of shortening separating zippers is the fact that you cut of the top stops. Depending on the pattern that you sew, there might be a few ways how to solve this. When I showed you an alternative way to sew the Foliis, I showed that you can simply sew the end of the zipper into the hood. Today, I am showing you how to melt a new stop.

Toen ik mijn meest recente Cicero hack naaide, maakte ik foto’s van het inkorten van de plastic rits. De grootste uitdaging aan het inkorten van een deelbare rits is het afknippen van de ritsstop. Afhankelijk van het patroon zijn er verschillende oplossing. Toen ik jullie een alternatieve manier liet zien om de kap van de Foliis te naaien, naaide ik de rits helemaal in de kap bijvoorbeeld. Vandaag laat ik zien hoe je een nieuwe ritsstop kan boetseren.

The first step is to cut your nylon zipper to the preferred length. Keep in mind that a zipper is always a bit longer than where the teeth end, so cut of the zipper a few teeth above the length you want the zipper to be.

De eerste stap is het op maat knippen van de rits. Een rits is altijd iets langer dan dan waar de tandjes eindigen. Knip de rits dus een paar tanden boven de optimale lengte af. 

Pry of the teeth that you do not need. This might need some practice, but if you do it carefully you usually can take them off without damaging the zipper tape. If you damage the zipper tape it might start fraying. If you do damage it, quickly run the damaged part through a flame, this will create a new protection layer.

Wrik nu de tanden die je niet nodig hebt weg met een tang. Hier heb je mogelijk wat oefening bij nodig. Het is namelijk belangrijk om de stof waar de tanden op zitten niet te beschadigen, anders gaat het makkelijk rafelen. Mocht je het toch een beetje beschadigen kan je het eventueel even langs een open vlam houden, dan smelt de rits tape tot een nieuw beschermlaagje aan de zijkant. 

While prying of the teeth, try to have two teeth that are still intact. If this does not succeed, you can also pull two from the cut of piece. Sometimes, you need to damage the zipper tape to have an intact teeth, in that case it is best to destroy the teeth on the zipper piece you want to keep and just remove two from the piece that you would have thrown away.

Probeer om twee tandjes intact te houden. Als dit niet lukt, kan je ook nog twee tandjes halen van het stuk dat je afknipte. Soms is het erg lastig om de stof niet te beschadigen en de tanden intact te houden. Dan kan je dus dat reststuk gebruiken om een mooi tandje te krijgen.

Put one of the teeth between the two upper teeth from the zipper.

Plaats de losse tand tussen de bovenste twee tanden van een zijde. 

Now, take a hot tool. I use a wood works tool, but a solding iron works just as good. If you do not have any of those small heat sources you can try your regular iron (only the tip) or try a lighter, but it will be bit harder to mold the three zipper teeth into pretty new stop. The idea is to carefully melt the extra tooth into the first two and slightly shape it. The plastic will fume, so do this outside or in a well ventilated environment.

Neem nu een heet gereedschap, ik gebruik iets voor houtbewerking (kostte nog geen 15 euro), maar een soldeerbout werkt even goed. Mocht je geen van beide hebben kan je ook je strijkbout (alleen de punt) or eventueel een aansteker gebruiken, het is dan wel lastiger een mooie stop te creëren. Het plastic smelt snel. Duw de extra tand tot aan de bovenkant van de eerdere twee en boetseer een zo glad mogelijk laagje.

Repeat this step for the other side of the zipper. Wait a minute for the new stops to cool, and you are ready. Now cut another Foliis or Cicero to test your new skill!

Doe hetzelfde voor de andere zijde. Wacht een minuut of twee om de rits af te laten koelen en je bent klaar. Knip nu snel een nieuwe Cicero of Foliis om je nieuwe techniek uit te proberen.
